What is TMS Therapy?

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and the FDA approved it in 2008 for treating major depressive disorder (MDD).

This innovative technology was found to help patients overcome treatment-resistant depression when antidepressant medications didn’t work.

Since that time, it has shown to be effective for many other mental health conditions.

TMS Therapy is a safe, painless, and non-invasive method of stimulating regions of the brain that impact mood and the way we feel.

It has been considered a breakthrough approach for treating a wide range of conditions when traditional methods failed or caused uncomfortable side effects.

What Does TMS Therapy Treat?

TMS Therapy was originally used mainly for treatment-resistant depression, and over time it was shown to be an effective therapy for many other mental health issues.

TMS treatment gained FDA approval for depression treatment in 2008 and later for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), migraine headaches, and smoking cessation.

Even though it is currently under review for approval or clearance of other conditions, it is used off-label for a wide range of others.

How Does TMS Treatment Work?

TMS is known as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation because it uses a magnetic coil placed over the head to stimulate or activate areas of the brain involved in mood and other functions.

It works similar to an MRI, which is why it produces a clicking sound during a treatment session.

The electromagnetic coil delivers a safe, painless, and non-invasive magnetic pulse that stimulates nerve cells in the brain that are not in balance or functioning properly, thereby causing depression and other conditions.

The TMS repetitive pulses are directed at a small region of the brain and create electrical currents similar to those produced by the brain to activate neurotransmitters that control mood and the way we feel.

Antidepressants and other medications use chemicals to target neurotransmitters, whereas TMS is a manual form of stimulating the brain.

Typical TMS Therapy machines require up to 40 minutes per session to activate brain cells, but at Malibu TMS, we use MagVenture Theta Burst TMS Technology that reduces the typical treatment time to just 3 minutes for many applications.

Is TMS Therapy Effective?

Because each person is unique, some do not respond to traditional treatment approaches like medications or behavioral therapy.

TMS Therapy was initially found to work well for people who did not respond as expected to antidepressants. For those who tried TMS, 50 to 60 percent of them had a positive response and approximately 30 percent had a full remission according to Harvard Health.

For people who struggled with generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder together, 76 percent found relief from depression symptoms and 84 percent from anxiety, according to a study at the National Library of Medicine.

The FDA extended approval of TMS for smoking cessation, obsessive-compulsive disorder and migraine headaches based on successful outcomes.

In 2020, the FDA granted breakthrough status for treating bipolar disorder with TMS Therapy because of its effectiveness as a viable treatment option.
